In the icon of the Feast of the Nativity of Christ (December 25), much Scriptural material is visually "quoted." At the center is the cave (a detail from St. Justin the Philosopher, Dialogue with Trypho, written circa 155 AD) with the manger in which Christ lies swaddled, watched over by the ass and ox (Isaiah 1:3). The Virgin, gazing directly at the viewer, reclines next to her Child, emphasizing His human nature. To the right, shepherds behold angels who announce the glad tidings, and to the left, the Magi approach and present their gifts, recognizing the incarnate Lord. Two mid-wives bathe the new-born Christ, showing the Lord's condescension to the human condition. In the lower left corner of the icon, Joseph, the Virgin's betrothed, ponders the mystery of this birth. He is shown separate from the Mother and Child, indicating that he is not the Child's father. Above the cave, the star that proclaims the Christ Child's divinity proceeds from a sphere, a symbol of the heavens. It extends beyond the space defined by the icon, to make clear that this star is not merely an astronomical phenomonon, but connects the event to that which is beyond time and space.
The icon reproduced on the front panel of this card was painted by the masters of the Icon-Painting Workshop "Kovcheg" in Yaroslavl, Russia. The inside is left blank except for a black and white detail of the Nativity scene from the icon.
