podlinnik
or patternbook are included and contain numerous color descriptions and notes. The source of this book upon which the English translation was made is the Stroganov Family's Icon Painter's Handbook, published in Slavonic in the mid-19th century from the 16th century originals. Pages missing from the original are reconstructed in this volume from other sources. This is an essential addition to any library for the faithful painting of ancient and traditional icons. The original narrative is supplemented with articles on the Staganov family and its school of icon-painting, a detailed alphabetical index, genealogical and historical data.
