St. Petersburg Iconographer Alexander Stalnov

Before becoming an iconographer, Alexander Stalnov studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts and the Repin Institute. In 1984, he found the Orthodox Church and took a great interest in traditional Russian icon writing. He was baptized the same year and began to study ancient Russian and Byzantine masterpieces. In 1988, he entered the icon class at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and Seminary. In 1990, he was accepted onto the staff at the Theological School as an icon writer and teacher. In that same year, he went to New York where he wrote several icons for St. Vladimir's Seminary. For the past ten summers he has conducted icon-writing workshops sponsored by the Icon Association of Bologna, Italy. He has taught professional iconographers who gathered there from different parts of Italy. Since 1998, he has been teaching icon-painting workshops at the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts.

He has been commissioned to write icons for many churches in Russia and Italy. In 2000-2001, he directed work on the iconostasis of the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God (Church of the Blockade) in St. Petersburg together with students and associates of the icon-painting workshop at Alexander Nevsky Lavra.

- The iconostasis of the Church of the Holy Righteous Ekaterina in the Academy of Applied Arts (St. Petersburg)
- Icons for the chapel of the seminary of. Albano (Rome, Italy)
- Deisis for the Church of the St. Apostle Luke (Padua, Italy)
- Deisis of the Dormition Church (Kirkonnumi, Finland)
- Icons for the iconostasis of the Dormition Church of the Holy Virgin (Church of the Blockade, St. Petersburg)
