Art & Spirituality of the Icon

Art & Spirituality of the Icon is presented by Fr. Brendan in two parts, the first being “Icon: Sacred Image,” six hours of slide lectures examine the history, tradition and spirituality of the icon as sacred image, founded on the mystery of the Incarnation. The second part, is entitled, “Introduction to Icon Painting,” during which a maximum of eighteen students are gently and prayerfully guided through approximately twenty-four hours of icon construction. They are introduced to the practical first steps of iconography, then assisted to complete their icons with gold gilding and finishing. A student need not have any previous fine arts training, but those with some experience may initially absorb ancient and modern techniques more quickly. Above all, the presentation stresses that iconography is a sacred craft, an ancient prayer form intimately related to Christian liturgy, hymnology, theology and Sacred Scripture. It is approached reverently with thanksgiving and joy.
